Customer Reviews

working well. I used to use this when I was a kid and I bought this for my husband's lunch now. I think that's funny. My husband does care about eating healthy so he wanted to take his lunch with him. He doesn't want to eat at dining facility because they only serve heavy food.I have to get up early to fix his lunch and put them in this jar so that it keeps food warm but my husband can eat warm nice healthy food that I made for him. And he thanks me and tells me that I am a sweet wife so fixing his lunch is very fun and happy time for me. When my husbands gets home he always tell me that how his friends were interested in his lunch and wanted to taste some. This item is good to keep food warm about 5hours and after 5hours you might have to use microwave.( but food is not cold just needs to be heated little) containers are easy to wash and dry fast with towel. I like the bag came with it. There is small room on the top so you can put your snack on it. I put apple or little bag of nuts. I remember my mom bought lunch jar for me when I was a kid and it was like over 20years ago and she paid 35$ I think. I paid for this under 60$ so I think price is pretty good. 5Worthwhile investment, Keeps Food Hot For A While, Good For Portion Control... - I bought the black version with the 3 bowls as I felt that the black color shall hide stains easily and it shall not show its age easily in a few years. I wish they could have a black version for the one with the 4 bowls.- This one includes a main bowl (20 oz.), side bowl (13.5 oz.) and a soup bowl (9.5 oz.) with their respective covers.- It also comes with an insulated cover, has a strap for easy carrying, instructions in English, a spork (spoon & folk combo) and chopsticks. The chopsticks are enclosed in a case that slides on the outside of the outer big container.- The lower smallest bowl is for 'soup' but I usually use it for beef stew. The middle bowl is for rice and maybe pasta. The upper bowl is for fruits and vegetables, anything you want in room temperature.- I boiled water and poured the hot water in the soup bowl and the rice bowl to 'preheat' the bowls and covered them. I keep the hot water in the bowls for 10 minutes.- I then pour soup/beef stew into the smallest bowl and close it. When properly closed, the white rubber topper comes up straight. The soup bowl goes to the bottom. The middle bowl is where I place the rice or pasta, basically carbs, the main part of the meal. There are arrows showing how the bowl should be closed and the paper instructions illustrate how the bowl should be closed.- the top bowl is not an insulated kind, so I keep fruits and vegetables in there. I was worried that the top bowl would 'heat' up my fruits but they were okay at room temperature. Not ice cold but not hot either.- The 3 bowls settle perfectly into the outer container and are easy to put in and pull out. Once the 3 bowls are in the container, in order, the outer container has a cover that snaps easily and the container goes easily in the insulated bag, which, with its strap, is easy to carry from place to place. I carry the container whilst using public transportation and it's almost inconspicuous.- I have been putting the hot foods in at 6.30 am. At 3.30 pm, 9 hours later, the foods are warm enough to eat. Not piping hot but not cold-ish either. The type of hot that needs a half- minute to a minute in the microwave. I ate the food at 12.30 pm (put into containers at 6.30 am) and the food was quite warm, not needing to be reheated. The longer the wait, the less hot the food gets. You can still eat it without reheating it but it won't be piping hot if that's your thing.- I purchased glass Pyrex bowls to store food at night so that I would reheat the food in the morning and put it into the bowls. The bowls are also microwaveable. (But without their covers)- It sounds pricey but basically, it pays itself in a week or two of meal preparation.- the portions look small but I got satisfied after eating food from the 3 bowls, beef stew, rice and seedless melon. I am a middle sized man. It's a good way to commence portion control.- Clean the bowls are fast as you can. I haven't had a problem with smells but some commenters have. I bought black to avoid seeing food stains.- I am using this jar in conjunction with the Zojirushi flask which I use to carry hot coffee or tea (see the review I have written) and I carry both in one of those $1.99 reusable grocery bags and they fit perfectly.- I have posted pictures of what it looks like, foods included. There are a lot of pictures of prepared foods for the Zojirushi in the images for the larger stainless steel version, if you want to have an idea of the kinds of meals that can be carried in these Zojirushi jars.- there are also a lot of pictures in Flickr under MrBento that can assist you with the preparation of meals. I believe there is also a bento book here in Amazon. 5Performs better than expected This bento jar is wonderful to use. I've been putting my densest hot food in the soup bowl, which goes on the bottom. Hot veggies go in the larger middle bowl. I put cold/room temperature food in the top bowl. My two hot dishes stay hot. Not warm, but hot. This is after an hour or two only. I haven't tried using this product to hold food longer. The cold/room temperature food stays that way. Heat does not seem to transfer. The set comes with chopsticks as well as a spoIrk. These each have a carrying case that fits with the bento box set.I like the dark color. It makes the food look nice. The set is a very high quality product. The bowls are substantial, not flimsy. Each bowl has a lid, unlike some other bento box sets. The carrying "tower" can be pre-heated with hot water. This is an easy and effective step. The spork is not flimsy. The chopsticks are nice also.I'm very happy that I purchased this product. 5My everyday Lunch box I bought this on September 3, 2011, and from all the items that I have got from Amazon, this is the one that I use the most, so I really think that I can provide a fair and useful advise, for the people that is thinking about to buy it or not. I will rate each component by separate, and then a will review the product as a whole, so you will get a very good idea about what to expect.Bag:Let's start with the bag, which it is made with some kind of synthetic cloth, very sturdy a resilient, mine it is still look as new as the first day, with no signs of tearing or stains, and not any nasty odors at all, you open and close the bag using a combination of velcro fasteners (one at each side) and two metallic buttons, all of them working as designed, so considering that I use this bag 5 days a week during the last two years, I will rate the bag with well deserved it 5 stars.Metallic Jar:The jar, it is the main component of this set, that will keep the temperature (together with the bag, I think) of your food, and allows you to carry the plastic containers. It is painted black outside, and it covered by a grey plastic inside, in the top it is a plastic cap that seals the jar, and it is attached by a set of plastic latches. For today the jar looks as new, no paint tearing or scratches ( I always use the bag), the plastic cap has just some very tiny scratches, and the plastic latches are brand new, so again 5 stars for the jar, that was built for last.Plastic containers:The set have three plastic containers, that are stored in the following order: the smallest goes in the bottom, and it is leaking proof, then you placed the tallest one that has more capacity, that even it looks like it is leaking proof, is not, and finally the medium size one that goes in the top, not leaking proof either. So when you package your food you should try to keep anything that potentially can leak (soup, stew, etc) in the small one, and forget about it, so even if the jar fell to one side (when you are driving), everything will be contained. Even if you failed to do this the leaking will be minimum ( so you can clean it with a napkin), and will remain for all means inside the jar, but I truly think that is better to avoid any spill at all, so use the container as is indicated.Normally I package my food at night in the containers, and put them in the refrigerator, next morning I will store the containers in the jar, drive to work, and let the jar at my desk. At noon I will take everything to the pantry area, and will reheat the food in the microwave (without the lids), the food will remain cold until noon guaranteed and I never have had anything spoiled it. After I eat, I will wash the containers, dry them and put them back in the jar, and the cycle start again that night. As all plastic containers in a long run , they can get smelly, the easy solution is to wash them once in a while in the dishwasher, and no smell will remain. The containers are working as designed, but I would really like that all of them were 100% leaking proof so I will rate them with 4 stars only.Utensils:It brings a set of chopsticks (useless for me), and an spork. The chopsticks came attached directly to the jar with a clever mechanism, the spork is storaged in a pocket inside the bag. The spork is made of stainless steel, and for today, it looks brand new, if you are missing the knive and a real spoon, you can add any utensil set that you want (I did, I bought one in Amazon too).Even that I already knew that this is a japanese product (made in thailand BTW), I would expect it that included a full set of utensils, a not only a spork (even that the one provided has excellent quality), just for that I will rate the utensils 4.5 stars.Overall:I believe that I got a great deal buying this Vacuum Lunch Jar, you can notice that was engineered and built with quality in mind, it is so close to be the perfect lunch box, that is a shame that you can still find some ways to improve it, anyway I will highly recommend to anybody, it will keep your food heat or cold, and allow you to pack reasonable portions, and as I said before it get the perfect combination of a good design, a quality craftsmanship and materials. My rate overall is between 4.5 and 5 stars.P.S: I found the following product in Amazon: Zojirushi SL-XCE20HG Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tiffin Box, it has 4 containers, 3 of them are leaking proof, it is a little more expensive than this one, but it is the right answer to the leaking issue. 5Another great lunch box I have a few of the other Zojirushi lunch containers (Ms. and Mr. sets) and I bought this one so I'd have more and not have to wash the containers every night. It's probably my own fault but I didn't realize these containers are HUGE. It can hold way more food than I'd ever be able to eat for lunch so I gave it to my husband (army guy). He loves that even if they are out in the field for the day (no access to the microwave) his food is still warm and he likes to brag and show off the home cooking. He also loves that this one comes with chopsticks along with the spork. I'm glad he gets a use out of it. 4Love this bento lunch bag I love this thing. I was a little worried about the size of it but luckily I was able to figure out a way to pack this in my motorcycle luggage bags so I can take it to work with me.The containers are a good size for me, I'd probably adjust the sizes of each container a little if it was up to me, but that's just being nit picky there.I haven't tried using it to keep foods warm all morning, I always just put my containers full of food in the fridge over night so it's already cold then just put it in the thermo container in the morning before I leave. By the time lunch comes around, my food is always still nice and cold and ready for the microwave (without the lids, the lids are not microwave safe). The spork that comes with it is very handy and fits nicely inside the bag. The included spork and chopsticks was the main reason I selected this one over some of the other Zojirushi models, and I'm happy I did.Only thing I wish is that the bag was a little bigger to allow extra things to be added to it, like bananas or other fruits, but it's not a big deal. 5Keeps food warm and well-packed I've had the lunchbox for over a month now and so far haven't had any issues with spillage, temperature, or food capacity. I noticed the food wasn't piping hot for hours even after preheating the containers, but the canister is insulated enough to keep the food warm. The bottom, smallest container holds soup well and doesn't spill at least from my experience. I've also used the largest middle container for stew without spillage. The top middle sized container I've usually used for veggies, fruit, crackers, or other non-liquid items. The containers seem to fit snugly into the canister. The largest container has a semi screw on top that clicks and secures with one turn. The middle sized container has a snap on lid. The smallest has a screw on lid. I can see possible spillage issues if the canister was thrown around or toppled over, but from simply carrying it using the attached canister strap, no leakage problems so far. Food capacity is sufficient but for someone who likes to eat big, hearty lunches or eats a lot in general--probably not enough room. It's easy to wash too and takes only a few minutes with dishwashing soap and warm water. 4I did not expect the portion sizes to be perfect.. Buying this, I did not expect the portion sizes to be perfect... it did come really close though (as I was testing portion sizes for the containers while having dinner.)A few reasons why I chose to buy this Bento Box/Jar was that it was insulated.... just cook your food ahead of time and put it in the container or microwave your food in the containers... which can last 5 hours at least. The main container can fit a decent amount of rice along with said main dish (I chose curry as it was easy to eat in a 30 minute time-frame.)It can easily fit a few cups of salad along with some dressing (more if the salad is pressed down a little.)A carry case along with a spork and chopstickWhat I chose to do was to microwave soup and main dish, and fruits at the top.... which conveniently works out with what the bento box was intended.I would have, however, love it even more if the soup container held a bit more soup, as it felt like I gulped it down in fairly quickly. 5... for about 2 years now and it's still in good shape. First of all I bought this for my husband for about 2 years now and it's still in good shape. First of all, my husband hates waiting in line to microwave food which it takes about 5 minutes since his work place have only 2 low watt microwave. Lunch break for him is 30 minutes, it takes him 3-4 minutes to walk to the lunch room, 5 minutes in line, 4-5 minutes to microwave his food leaving him about 10 minutes to eat quickly and walk back to his work station. He feels so rushed so during one summer, he ate only sandwich and salad. Pretty much doesn't fill him up since we're asian and needs rice. He got tired from eating those so I decided to do some research and came upon the zojirushi lunch jar. The reason upon choosing this brand is because I bought a rice cooker a year or two before buying this lunch jar and the quality of the brand is beyond expectation so I didn't hesitate to buy the lunch jar even though it's pricey. Although it's been about 2 years or so, the lunch jar still works as if you just bought it. I usually pack my husband lunch around noon and he doesn't eat until 8 which is 8 hours later and the foods are still hottish warm. However, I have not tried cold food so can't really review on it. The container are okay. For a big guy, the foods that I packed for him was able to fill him up until when he comes home. It's really easy to clean and the spork is high quality spork, not some cheap looking ones. The chopstick is plastic which my husband barely use anyways. The only thing that I would complain is that there's no slot for the spork which you'll have to put inside the bag and also the bottom container (the spill proof one), spills a bit which doesn't bothered me much but sometime it's just hard to twist it closed if you packed liquids in there otherwise it's hard to twist open at times when you need to clean it. Overall, I still love the lunch jar knowing that my husband can take his time to eat and doesn't need to heat up the foods. I was also able to fit 2 can of soda in the bag for him which saved more $$ since one can is 75cents each at work. 5LOVE IT!!! I sell products in an open air market. I've tired so many different "thermos" type products for food and NONE of them worked!! I would pack my hot lunch in other products and an hour later it would be stone cold.I have a Zojirushi rice cooker and decided it was time to look into this bento style lunch box. IT IS FANTASTIC!!I packed my lunch at 8:00am which included curry, rice and some veggies. I opened it for lunch at 1:00pm and steam rose from the first container. In case you're wondering it was 37 F (2 C).I can also pack a combination of hot and cold foods with the same success. It's worth every penny I spent! 5
