Fantastic Bento Box I got tired of toting a plastic bag full of various-sized plastic containers for my lunch every day, and started doing some research to figure out the best option. I love the premise of a bento lunch - variety and portion control in a slim little package. After checking multiple different websites and reviews for a couple of different bento boxes, I settled on this version and I am so happy I did. When it arrived, I wasn't sure that the Ms. Bento would be able to accommodate my usual lunch (soup and a raw potato to be cooked at work). I guess it doesn't , but I have adapted my lunch to the container with great results! Here's what's inside the canister:- Inside the lid, there is a small bowl with a removable half moon shaped cup that slides neatly inside. You can remove if you need more room, but I use for half veggies (e.g., grape tomatoes) and half fruits (e.g., blueberries). This container isn't temperature controlled, so if you have something that starts out hot or cold, you will have to put it in the fridge or microwave to maintain the temp.- Below the top container is the largest bowl. It probably holds about a cup, maybe a little more. This is ideal for salad or bulkier items (I have used it for a half sandwich, some dumplings, or salad). An alternative is to make a two-level container using silicone baking cups, which I also purchased at the same time. I can fit 4 silicone cups inside the largest container as long as they're not overfull. This is not a temperature controlled container either, but will inevitably be warm or cold based on whatever might be in the bottom container.- The bottom bowl is the smallest and is temperature controlled. It holds approximately 1/2 cup (I'm guessing, don't quote me exactly) and does a remarkable job of keeping warm foods warm and cold foods cold. I usually put rice, stew, soup, etc. in this container.The package also comes with a nice little bag. Inside the bag on the side seam there is an elastic loop that holds the included spork(along with cover). There's room in the elastic for additional silverware, if you really need a knife or something else.Overall, I am really pleased with this lunch box. The quality of the workmanship feels excellent, and I think I will be using my Ms. Bento for a very long time. 5Good thermos. Keeps food hot My husband loves this bento thermos. We ve been used it all week. Each morning at 7am I put hot water in each container while I heat up his lunch. This way the containers are nice and warm when I put his hot lunch in it. Then I send him on his way. He usually eats lunch around 2-3pm so it s in the thermos for 7-8 hours before he gets a chance to eat and says it s still plenty warm when he eats it. Great product. Only issue I have is it says don t tip thermos on its side or upside down. The containers don t seal 100% and my husband tipped it on its side on accident and said a little of his chili leaked out into the thermos itself. Other then that it serves its purpose and works great for us. 5does not keep warm for long I got this for my kindergartener as she does not like the school lunches. It kept soup hot if I was to prime the container and boiled the soup to a rapid boil and kept it at rapid boil for at least 2 minutes. On the other hand hot spaghetti did not even stay luke warm she goes in at 8 am has lunch at 10:30am and I would make sure lunch was the last thing I did before I would take her. Only a 5 minute drive so It would be piping hot at 7:45 am. The one time she used it for cold Items it stayed cold so now I am on the hunt for a good hot food container as we will use this $40 for only cold items. 2and I like it very much I've been using this for a while now, and I like it very much. I need a leakproof lunchbox because I carry mine in my backpack. These containers are a decent size, and the thermal jar does keep temperature very well. I like the little spork that comes with the set, and the carry bag has plenty of space for a piece of fruit, extra napkins, or a drink. It's not a huge bag, but you can fit some nice extra goodies in there next to the jar. My only complaints are the gasket on the soup bowl (which has of late started popping out of the top and causing my food to leak) and the size, which is small for me. I carry this to my evening classes and late workdays, and it's certainly not enough to hold a full dinner. Of course, it is just a lunchbox, but if you're looking for something to hold enough food for the long haul, I'd try a Mr. Bento.This is overall a well-made product that I would recommend. I've carried this around for almost a year and have only just now begun to have issues with parts, so this is a tough bit of kit and it's worth the extra cash. Definitely a step up from neoprene and plastic ware sadness; bonus points for keeping your nice meal away from work's icky community fridge! 4It keeps everything hot I bought two of those for my 8-years old kids to take hot lunch to school. We've used Thermos Foogo before(too small for older kids) and had horrible experience with Vaya Tiffin. I wouldn't say I love it, but that thing really works.It has three inner containers. The one that goes on the bottom is for soup, but it is very tiny, not much to eat. Second container can hold relatively dry hot food. Third goes on top, for room temperature snacks or salad.For hot food packed at 7 am and still hot at noon, and warm enough to eat at 4pm: Before packing up food I pour boiling water inside insulated outer container for a few minutes. Put second container on top to warm it up. Pour boiling water into soup container and close the lid. Then I'm ready to pack - I drain water from outer container, put hot food in the second container. Put soup bowl with hot water on the bottom, hot food container on top, some snacks and fruits in "cold" third container. The key is to have very hot liquid in the bottom container.Few things that bug me is: that top container heats up over time too and thing like cheese slowly melt outer container doesn't have any handles no color optionsOverall I'm happy with my purchase. 4Great for hot lunches; terrific for kids EDIT: I spoke to some of the teachers at my kid's daycare and they said the food is nice and warm at lunchtime, which I was happy to hear. They also said that they've seen lots of insulated/thermos-type lunch containers, and this one is by far the best at keeping food warm. I am super pleased with the Ms. Bento and how much flexibility it gives me in packing my kid's lunch!I bought this for my kid's lunch because our daycare doesn't have a microwave or crockpot/bain-marie to heat food, even for babies eating baby food/finger foods. I find that the Ms. Bento is a good size for a one-year-old with a healthy appetite who eats finger foods, and I'm sure it'll work well as my kid gets older and wants to eat more.I bought some silicone cupcake liners and use them to divide food in the separate containers. The container that goes at the bottom is the "soup" container, 7 oz, and I can get two cupcake liners in there if I squish them. I put three to five pieces of different kinds of veggies in each liner and pack some more around the liners; there's plenty enough space for baby-cut carrots, broccoli/cauliflower florets, small pieces of potatoes, green beans cut small, etc. The lid screws on and has a rubber ring, so it's watertight.The container that goes in the middle is the "main" container, 10 oz, and I can get two cupcake liners in there. I usually put pasta in one and some kind of meat in the other; I can squeeze in 8-12 spirals of pasta into one cupcake liner and some slices of meatloaf in the other, no problem, and of course the entire container itself can hold a lot more. I think the lid is insulated, but I don't think it's watertight--it's not threaded/screwable; it's a put-on-and-twist-ten-degrees mechanism.The container that goes on top--the "side" container, 11 oz--has a small divider compartment of its own. I put fruit and cold cuts into this container because it's not intended to keep the food inside hot. I usually can get a strawberry or two an some diced cantaloupe or some apple slices in there, plus another cupcake liner with some shredded ham. This container is actually quite big and can fit a lot; I definitely don't use all the capacity for my kid's fruit and ham. It has a lid that pulls off; the lid has a rubber ring around it. It's probably not watertight, but I haven't had any problem with leaks or spills, even though I've put wet stuff (like fruit) in it.I honestly don't know how warm the food is when my kid gets fed at daycare, but I'm pretty sure it's not cold, which is enough for me (and probably for my kid, too). I pack the "warm food" containers--the soup and main containers--the night before and keep them in the fridge. In the morning, I fill the bento container with hot water from the tap and let it sit while I'm preparing breakfast and the food for the top container, probably 5-10 minutes. Then I heat the warm food containers in the microwave for a minute, put the lids on, pour the water out from the bento container and dry it, and assemble the whole thing.There's enough space in the bag that's included for a water bottle in the 12-16 oz range, eating utensils, plus something relatively slim, like a ziploc of crackers or cookies.While I was researching insulated food containers for my kid to take to daycare, I bought the Mr. Bento to check it out, too. Mr. Bento is significantly bigger and heavier and has way more space and an extra container; it was too much for what we needed. This version of Ms. Bento (with three containers--there is also another with just two) has enough containers for what my kid eats, the bag is sturdy, and overall its profile is smaller and easier for carrying around. Everything seems pretty sturdy and well-made; I can see us using this for years. 5Short and sweet Not bad; living for six years in Japan I got used to the Obento lifestyle; simple, smaller portions, neat. Zojirushi is a large manufacturer and I especially am impressed with the build quality and simplicity of this set. Portion sizes may be a little small for the average American but you can do a lot worse for the price. I only wish there were a side pocket for accessories and that the latch system was was a bit tougher and more precise. You do have some room in the bag for a few snacks etc. Overall I'm very pleased with the Ms. Bento set. 4HOT 6 hours later I used my new lunch box for the first time today. I followed directions and filled the outer container with hot water (not boiling, just hot tap water) to prep it (about 5-10 minutes). I put very hot vegetable soup in the bottom container, rice and meat in the middle container, and fruit/nuts in the top container. I expected the fruit/nuts to be warm, but surprisingly, they were cold! Everything else was hot (not just warm, almost as hot as when I put it in. Based on other reviews, I was expecting it to be maybe room temperature when I opened it since I filled it at 6 am and ate lunch at noon. What a very pleasant surprise!Update: I've been using this lunch box for almost one month. It's seriously the best $35ish I've ever spent. I've lost weight, I eat way less junk, and it's actually been quite entertaining deciding what to put in each container every day. I thought I'd be sick of washing containers by now, but it hasn't really been a problem. It keeps cold things cold and hot things hot and provides excellent portion control. 5Stylish and keep you organized! I love this bento combo. It definitely keeps your item warm. Zojirushi is a quality brand name. It looks very sturdy and should last a long time. As for portion, it looks small at first. After I finished all the bowls, I am full. This set is for sure for women. If you want to get it for your boyfriend or husband, this might be too small.There are a lot of pieces to wash, if you don t mind doing dishes by hand. I can also squeeze a drink cup into the lunch bag. Hope everybody enjoy the lunch bag! 5Excellent lunch bento I debated for awhile before purchasing this item, but decided to go for it after receiving a Zojirushi thermos as a gift and being impressed by how well it kept hot drinks hot for hours and ice cubes frozen for hours as well. This is a beautifully designed bento and I get compliments on it every time I used it. The soup and main compartment stays hot, but the top compartment is basically at room temperature. The container sizes look small but are actually good for a very decently sized meal. Great for portion control and storing items separately for lunch. 5
